Gold Star Family Support: Memorials

Daniel Wyatt Memorial

On October 12, 2004, Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt was killed in action in Iraq.

On March 1, 2011, the board of supervisors of the Village of Caledonia in Wisconsin, Daniel's hometown, unanimously passed a resolution to name the newly built concession stand and ball diamond area within a local park the “LCpl Daniel R. Wyatt Memorial Ball Park.”

The resolution also calls for the placement of a memorial to Daniel, an avid baseball fan, in a beautiful grassy area within the park.

In order to help bring the memorial to fruition, the resolution sets up a mechanism whereby the general public can make donations.

Here is a compelling request for funds from Daniel's father:

It is such a wonderful thing to know that the community in which Daniel grew up is willing to honor him in such a thoughtful and appropriate way! Words just can't express our gratitude.

I suspect that the size and scope of it [the memorial] will depend, in large part, on the funds available. That is the reason for which I am writing to you today.

Please find it in your heart to help us out by sending a small donation. Whatever you can afford. Though large donations would, of course, be gratefully accepted I think that it would be appropriate if the memorial was built by the accumulation of donations from individuals who appreciate Daniel's service and ultimate sacrifice. When the officer goes down on one knee to hand you the folded flag he speaks of “a grateful nation.”

Thank you!
